Darrell Urban Black was born in Brooklyn, New York. His artistic pursuits began as a child and throughout his teens. In New York, Long Island, Black produced some 500 drawings while receiving much encouragement and support from his mother. She bought him paper, ink and pens. In 1980, Black joined the National Guard in New York and in 1988, transferred to the Army. In April 2001, Black  was nominated by the German government for "This Year's Prize For Promising Young Artists". Black has had many local, national and international group art exhibitions and has artwork permanently displayed in a number of art galleries, museums and other institutions in both America and Germany.
